Chapter Seven

Upon hearing the deep voice that had haunted his dreams, Aaron couldn’t help the soft gasp that escaped him. He swallowed hard as his throat suddenly became dry. Grabbing his beer, Aaron took a quick swig, trying to get a little moisture into his mouth.

“Grimley? I’m assuming that’s you?” Aziel called softly, and Aaron didn’t miss the way he was eyeing him with concern.

“It is,” Grimley confirmed, his deep voice soft and low. “Someone, uh, left the door open, so...” His voice trailed off, clearly uncertain.

“Yes, I left it open for you,” Jerome confirmed, holding Aaron’s gaze when Aaron snapped his attention to Aziel’s partner. “I knew Grimley would want the chance to talk once he found out you were here.” Reaching across the arms of their chairs so he could grip Aaron’s forearm, Jerome told him, “Grimley can stay out of sight. I know you were worried about seeing him again.” Wincing, he glanced toward the open door that led toward the bedroom. “Sorry, Grimley. I know that had to be hard to hear.”

“I already know my appearance alarms Aaron.” Grimley sounded resigned to that. “I hope that, in time, he’ll be able to accept how I look.”

Aaron knew he should say something. He just wasn’t certain... wait. “Y-You would r-raise my child as yours?” He frowned, confused. “Why? Why would you say that?”

Grimley didn’t take long to reply. “I would raise the babe as my own because he or she is a part of you.”

His soft rumbling voice caused the hairs on Aaron’s arms to lift in an oddly pleasant way.

“Even if we end up having children together, I would never treat this human babe any differently,” Grimley continued, sounding as if it was the most logical explanation in the world. “Well, perhaps there would be a few differences. Safety for one, since he wouldn’t have paranormal strength and speed.”

Aaron felt the makings of a smile tease at the corners of his lips when he realized Grimley had begun rambling. It told him the hulking male felt nervous. He found it... cute... not that he intended to ever tell him that. Most men hated to be referred to that way.

“Wait a minute,” Aaron cut in, frowning as he glanced between his brother and Jerome, who were cuddled together on the sofa to his left. “Did he just say something about us having children together?” Shaking his head as he watched them exchange a look, both of them appearing surprised. “Do you mean adopting?”

“Shit,” Aziel muttered, jumping to his feet. “I can’t believe I forgot about that.” He rushed over to where the remnants of their dinner had been left on the dining room table. “So stupid,” Aziel continued as he grabbed a napkin, then placed a cinnamon roll on it. Rushing back, he held it out to Aaron. “Eat it.”

Aaron stared at the cinnamon roll, which the kitchens had provided for dessert. Having eaten way too much of the delicious brick-oven baked pizza—there had been three different kinds, and all of them had been fantastic—he’d originally declined the dessert.
